Abstract: The path from a physical problem to useful predictive simulation can be winding and may require ideas from many disciplines.
Here this pipeline is discussed by examining some work done for Pliant Energy Systems. This work looks at a fluid-structure interaction problem that has required the development of new models and simulation methods to describe the complex motion of the underlying structure.
Additionally, in order to model the fluid-structure interaction, a coupling code interface is written to couple the structural model to a large-scale fluid solver, posing a nontrivial design challenge. We will walk through the decision process that begins with the physical problem and ends with the project's current status, giving an example of how a simulation modeling pipeline is constructed.
